Changing food systems will protect our planet! How?

Starting from the food on our plates.

The food we eat is related to many challenges around the world. Millions worldwide struggle to access sufficient and healthy food, while an enormous amount of natural resources is used to produce industrial, intensive ultra-processed food of animal origin that disregards the wellbeing of animals, people and the planet.
An urgent change is necessary to respond to the impact of factory farming and intensive fishing on our health, animal rights and the planet.
Planting The Future is a challenge that addresses issues connected to food systems and gives tips on how to face them.

Over four weeks, we will:

  • take a deep dive into our food system and its challenges 🐟
  • get inspired to cook up plant-rich meals 🫘
  • learn about agroecology as a solution 👨🏽‍🌾
  • and get into action! ✊🏾

Together, we can shape a world in which everybody has access to food that is good for us, good for those who grow it and good for the environment. We are Planting The Future.

FAQ

You’ll be joining thousands of people globally who are planting the future. Throughout February, you will receive daily emails with readings, podcasts and easy content to deepen your understanding of food systems. At the same time, we’ll feed you with recipes, tips and tools to understand how to make your meals more sustainable. During our virtual social hangouts, we’ll also discuss how to take action in our local contexts and have a positive impact on food systems.
  • Slow Food is a global movement of local groups and activists united by the common goal of ensuring everyone has access to good, clean and fair food. Founded in Italy in 1986, we are now active in more than 160 countries.
  • We envision a world where everyone can eat food that is good for them, good for the people who grow it and good for the planet.
  • We defend biological and cultural diversity. We educate, inspire and mobilize the world around us. We influence public decision makers and the private sector.

Over the last year we held a participatory process to listen to farmers, fishers, food artisans, Indigenous Peoples, cooks, youth, educators and activists regarding food systems, particularly of animal origin. We listened to their first-hand knowledge on the issues facing our food system during thirteen roundtable meetings involving more than 200 people from around 50 countries. The most urgent issues around animal farming and fishing were discussed, as well as potential solutions, and the priorities that Slow Food should focus on in order to support them.

No, we are not asking you to go vegan – and thus avoid all animal products on your plate. However, we will reflect on the origin of our food and how we can try to include more products sourced from agroecological farming and fishing. Based on your local context and possibilities, we’ll invite you to support food systems that are good for your health, animals and the planet.
